Literacy & Learning

Student for Service partners with GOAL (Giving Open Access to Learning), an afterschool program for Kindergartners through 8th graders in East Harlem, to provide an ongoing Saturday program for literacy and learning. Our teen volunteers serve as mentors and role models to the younger students, leading them in educational, recreational and community service projects. Through our GOAL Literacy & Learning program we provide disaster relief to children and seniors affected by Hurricane Sandy, run workshops on healthy nutrition and lifestyles, explore the power of art to affect social change through projects like our social justice poetry slam, work in local gardens, and explore other issues affecting the East Harlem community.
